If \(\beta\) is a real number with \(| \beta| >1\), then the series \(\sum_{-\infty<k\leq n}x_k\beta^k\) is called the \(\beta\)-expansion of its sum \(x\), if the coefficients \(x_k\) are non-negative integers, and for all \(m<n\) one has \(\sum_{-\infty<k\leq m}x_k\beta^k < \beta^{m+1}\) (\textit{A. Rényi} [Acta Math. Acad. Sci. Hung. 8, 477--493 (1957; Zbl 0079.08901)] for \(\beta>0\), and \textit{S. Ito} and \textit{T. Sadahiro} [Integers 9, No. 3, 239--259, A22 (2009; Zbl 1191.11005)] for \(\beta<0\)). The set of numbers whose \(\beta\)-expansion contains only finitely many non-zero terms is denoted by Fin\((\beta)\). It has been shown by \textit{Z. Masáková}, \textit{E. Pelantová} and \textit{T. Vávra} [Theor. Comput. Sci. 412, No. 8--10, 835--845 (2011; Zbl 1226.11015)] that if \(\beta<0\) and Fin\((\beta)\) contains all negative integers, then \(\beta\) is either a Pisot number or a Salem number. The authors show that if \(\beta<0\) and Fin\((\beta)\) contains all negative integers or all positive integers, then \(\beta\) is a Pisot number. Remark of the reviewer: the correct title of reference [6] is ``Beta-expansions with negative bases''.
