The authors consider the solution of homogeneous Dirichlet problems \(- \Delta u = g\) by means of non-overlapping domain decomposition methods (DDMs). Two sets of variables are used, namely approximations \(u_h^s\) of the solution \(u\) in each subdomain and an approximation \(\psi_h\) of \(u\) on the union of the interfaces of the subdomains. In the finite element discretization independent grids in the subdomains and on the union of the interfaces are used. By solving an auxiliary problem on the boundary of each subdomain values of each trace of \(u_h^s\) on the subdomain boundary are derived from the approximation \(\psi_h\). Quasi-optimal error estimates are proved. These estimates are independent of the number and of the size of the subdomains. Finally, two possibilities for the choice of the finite element spaces are discussed. It is explained how the abstract assumptions made before are fulfilled. The corresponding error estimates are given.
