The paper studies boundary-value problems of an asymptotic model equation derived from 3-D field equations for phase transitions in a slender cylinder. First, it is present analytical results of the authors' approach described in [Proc. R. Soc. Lond., Ser. A, Math. Phys. Eng. Sci. 462, No. 2065, 75--95 (2006; Zbl 1149.74384)]. The authors present different stages by obtaining the asymptotic model equation from the 3-D field equations. Then, three cases of the boundary conditions are considered, namely: (i) when the planar cross-section of two ends of the specimen are attached to rigid bodies, (ii) when the two ends are clamped into rigid bodies (the conditions according to the fact that there is no radial displacement for the point at the lateral surface), (iii) when the specimen has a dog-bone form with two thick ends and a thin middle part. By using a phase-plane analysis, it is solved a force-controlled problem under the non-deforming end conditions. All the possible bifurcations of solutions are classified. There are also compared the results with the authors' results obtained in above paper under the free end conditions. A displacement-controlled problem in the case of the total elongation is solved by using the analytical solutions obtained. The derived engineering stress-strain curve captures the main features (e. g. stress peak, stress drop and stress plateau) observed in experiments. In the case that there are multiple solutions the smallest energy criterion is used to determine the preferred configuration. Finally, there is the discussion of solutions under two types of boundary conditions, namely: (i) those which correspond to the clamped ends, and (ii) those which correspond to the case when specimen has a dog-bone form. They are compared with the solution under the non-deforming conditions.
