Let \(\mathcal H\) be a complex separable Hilbert space and let \(Z=\sum_{j=1}^n A_j\cdot A_j^*\) be a normal, unital, ergodic, completely positive map acting on the algebra \(B({\mathcal H})\) of all bounded linear operators on \(\mathcal H\). The \(n\)-tuple \((A_j)_{j=1}^n\), regarded as a row contraction, is said to be ergodic because \(Z\) is ergodic and coisometric because \(Z\) is unital. The authors define a notion of characteristic function for ergodic and coisometric row contractions with a one-dimensional invariant subspace for the adjoints and prove that this is a complete invariant for such tuples, showing as well how it can be computed.
