The author deals with the asymptotic behaviour of the spectrum of wide classes of elliptic systems of differential equations with piecewise continuous coefficients, which in turn implies new results for elliptic boundary value problems with indefinite weight. The case of scalar problems with indefinite weight vanishing on a set of nonzero measure is also considered.
