Let \(E\) be an order \(\sigma\)-complete Banach lattice such that \(0\leq S\leq T\) in \(L(E,E)\) and \(T\) compact imply \(S^{2}\) compact. Under these hypotheses, it was shown by \textit{A. W. Wickstead} [Q. J. Math., Oxf. II. Ser. 32, 239--253 (1981; Zbl 0431.47024)] that \(E\) or \(E^{\prime}\) has order continuous norm. The same conclusion works in the weak compactness variant, when \(0\leq S\leq T\) in \(L(E,E)\) and \(T\) weakly compact imply \(S\) weakly compact. The paper under review contains similar results in the framework of vector lattices endowed with locally convex topologies associated to suitable families of solid seminorms.
