Let \(R\) be a noetherian commutative ring and \(M\) a \(R\)-module. A submodule \(U\subset M\) is small in \(M\) if \(M\) is the only submodule \(V\subset M\) such that \(V+U=M\). A submodule \(W\subset M\) is coclosed in \(M\) if for every submodule \(U\subset W\) such that \(W/U\) is small in \(M/U\) it holds \(U=W\). \(M\) is called weakly injective if \(M\) is coclosed in every module extension of it. If \(R\) is local, one-dimensional integral domain with fraction field \(K\) and completion \({\hat R}\) then \({\hat R}\otimes_R K\) is weakly injective over \({\hat R}\) and \(K/R\) is weakly injective over \(R\). If \(R\) is local and \(M\) possesses a primary decomposition then every factor module of \(M\) is weakly injective iff for every \(p\) coassociated to \(M\) the fraction ring \(R_p\) is a field and \({\hat R}\otimes_R (R_p/pR_p)\) is semisimple.
