It is known (see \textit{G. Ruiz Goldstein} et al. [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 201, 461--477 (1996; Zbl 0861.34037)]) that under the assumptions: \(A_1,\,A_2,\dots ,A_n\) are distinct operators and generate \(C_0\)-semigroups on a Banach space \(X\) which are mutually commuting, \(A_j-A_k\) is injective and its range is large enough, the solution of the problem \[ \begin{cases} \sum_{i=1}^n\left(\frac{d}{dt}-A_i\right)u(t)=0,\\ u^{(k)}(0)=x_k\in X,\quad k=0,1,\dots ,n-1 \end{cases} \] is given by the d'Alembert formula \[ u(t)=\sum_{i=1}^ne^{tA_i}x_i. \] In this paper the authors find a formula for the unique solution of the above problem in the case that some of the operators \(A_i\)s are equal. This generalizes the above d'Alembert formula. They give also the explicit formula for the solution of the corresponding inhomogeneous initial value problem \[ \begin{cases} \sum_{i=1}^n\left(\frac{d}{dt}-A_i\right)u(t)=f(t),\quad f(0)\neq 0,\\ u^{(k)}(0)=x_k\in X,\,\,k=0,1,\dots ,n-1 \end{cases} \] and apply it to get explicit solutions of some partial differential equations.
