Motivated by their importance for the development of Morita duality, the authors devote this paper to the study of topological linearly compact objects in Grothendieck categories. Among other results, they give a characterization of linearly compact objects in semiartinian Grothendieck categories and they also show that, while Tikhonov's theorem is no longer true in the Grothendieck category setting, it holds for Grothendieck categories having a set of small projective generators. The last part of the paper is devoted to the study of the linear compactness of the dual algebra of a coalgebra. It is shown that, for these algebras, discrete linear compactness is equivalent to the noetherian property and, when the coalgebra is, furthermore, almost connected, then the topological linear compactness of the dual algebra is equivalent to the almost noetherian property.
