Let \(A\) be a vector space, usually infinite-dimensional, over the field \(F\). Suppose \(G\) is a group of \(F\)-automorphisms of \(A\). The central dimension of \(G\) is the dimension of \(A/C_A(G)\) over \(F\). The authors study such groups \(G\) that are soluble, have infinite central dimension and for which the set of all subgroups of \(G\) with infinite central dimension, ordered by inclusion, satisfies the maximal condition (the case of minimal condition having been considered earlier). The conclusions are long and complicated to state, so we refer the reader to the paper for the details. The major dichotomy is determined by whether \(G\) is finitely generated or not. The former splits again according to the structure of the intersection of \(G\) with the full finitary group of \(A\) over \(F\).
