Let \((R,{\mathfrak m})\) be a noetherian local ring, let \({\mathfrak a}\) be an ideal of \(R\) and let \(M\) be a finitely generated \(R\)-module of dimension \(n\). \textit{I. G. MacDonald} and \textit{R. Y. Sharp} [Q. J. Math., Oxf. II. Ser. 23, 197--204 (1972; Zbl 0235.14004)] proved the following result about the attached primes of the top cohomology module: \[ \text{Att}_R(H^{n}_{{\mathfrak m}}(M))=\{\mathfrak{p}\in \text{Ass}_R(M)\mid \dim(R/\mathfrak{p})=n\}. \] \textit{M. T. Dibaei} and \textit{S. Yassemi} [see Arch. Math. 84, No. 4, 292--297 (2005; Zbl 1085.13008)] generalized this result to: \[ \text{Att}_R(H^{n}_{{\mathfrak a}}(M))=\{\mathfrak{p}\in \text{Ass}_R(M)\mid \text{cd}(\mathfrak{a}, R/\mathfrak{p})=n\}. \] One of the main result in this paper is as follows: \[ \text{Att}_R(H^{d-1}_{{\mathfrak a}}(R))=\{\mathfrak{p}\in \text{Spec}(R)\mid \dim(R/\mathfrak{p})=d-1,\;\sqrt{\mathfrak{p}+\mathfrak{a}}\cap \text{Assh}(R)\}, \] for every \(d\)-dimensional local complete ring and any ideal \(\mathfrak{a}\) of \(R\) such that \(\dim(R/\mathfrak{a})=1\), \(H^d_{\mathfrak{a}}(R)=0\). His method to prove the results is to make use of what is known about associated primes of Matlis duals of local cohomology modules.
