This is a textbook which offers a very attractive material for learning / teaching discrete-event dynamic systems (DEDS). It is authored by two scientists with large experience in the field, both as researchers and as educators. The book places emphasis on the usage of Petri nets in DEDS modeling and control, but closely related topics (e.g. Grafcet, formal languages, automata, max-plus algebra) are also considered. The text contains 14 chapters, as follows: 1. Basic description of DEDS; 2. Graphs in modeling DEDS; 3. Formal languages; 4. Control of DEDS; 5. Finite automata; 6. Reactive flow diagram; 7. Petri net models of DEDS; 8. Properties of Petri nets; 9. Grafcet; 10. Timed and high-level Petri nets; 11. Statecharts; 12. DEDS modeling, control and programming; 13. Supervisory control; 14. Job scheduling. Besides illustrative examples, each chapter proposes exercises and problems for a deeper training. The exposition style is very accessible and recommends the book for different levels in studying DEDS. The potential beneficiaries are under- and postgraduate students, educators, practitioners and researchers working in control, manufacturing, computer and other engineering areas, where DEDS provide indispensable instruments for analysis and design.
