In this long paper, the authors develope some techniques to detect classes of higher algebraic \(K\)-theory in the regulator kernel of smooth projective varieties. The main regulator they concerned here is the absolute Hodge cycle-class map \(c^{X}_{\mathcal{H}}:CH^p(X, n)_{\mathbb Q} \rightarrow H^{2p-n}_{\mathcal{H}}(X, \mathbb Q(p))\) which is from the rational higher Chow groups to the absolute Hodge cohomology groups of \(X\). They define and compute higher Abel-Jacobi invariants for higher Chow cycles in the kernel of \(c_{\mathcal{H}}\). These higher invariants generalize the classical notion of normal functions and membrane integrals. They also constructe a candidate Bloch-Beilinson filtration in terms of vanishing of successive higher normal functions. One nice result the authors proves is that certain regulator-trivial exterior products and Pontryagin products of higher Chow cycles are strongly indecomposable which means they are not in the image of the map \(CH^{p-1}(X_K, n-1)\otimes K^* \rightarrow CH^p(X_K, n)\) where \(K\) is some subfield of \(\mathbb C\). The authors also consider Abel-Jacobi invariants for motivic cohomology of relative and singular varieties. The technique is rather involved but they obtain some very fascinating arithmetic examples. For a singular surface, they find that its regulator period is some special value of zeta function.
