The paper deals with time evolution of mutually coupled particle beam and radiation field, a typical process occurring in free electron laser configurations. Starting from a Hamiltonian model, it is shown that the wave-particle interaction causes a particle trapping leading to formation of a clamp that evolves as a single macro-particle structure localized in space. Since such a macro-particle affects the laser performance, the authors developed a technique to influence and control the macro-particle evolution by introducing a small perturbation term to the Hamiltonian.
