Assume that \(L\) is a linear operator of type \(\omega\), \(0\leq \omega < \pi/2\), on \(L^2(\mathbb R)\). Then \(L\) generates a~holomorphic semigroup. Suppose that this semigroup is represented by the kernel \(p_z(x,y)\) which satisfies a Poisson bound of order \(m>0\). Moreover, let \(L\) have a bounded \(H_{\infty}\)-calculus on \(L^2(\mathbb R)\). Denote by \(L^*\) the adjoint operator of \(L\). The authors introduce and develop the theory of two-parameter Hardy spaces \(H^1_L (\mathbb R\times \mathbb R)\) and BMO spaces BMO\(_L(\mathbb R\times \mathbb R)\) associated with the operator \(L\). In particular, they prove that BMO\(_{L^*}(\mathbb R\times \mathbb R)\) is the dual of \(H^1_L (\mathbb R \times \mathbb R)\) (this is the main result of the paper), they establish the \(L\)-molecular decomposition of \(H^1_L (\mathbb R\times \mathbb R)\), they characterize the space BMO\(_L(\mathbb R\times \mathbb R)\) in the terms of Carleson conditions and they obtain the John-Nirenberg inequality for the space BMO\(_L(\mathbb R\times \mathbb R)\). Applications involving the magnetic Schrödinger operator and second-order elliptic operators are given.
