This paper introduces a stronger version of the doubling condition on the measure in a metric measure space framework. Essentially, while in the doubling condition one compares two concentric balls, the generalized volume doubling condition allows for the comparison of two sets scaled and shifted along some set of geodesics. It is shown that the generalized volume doubling condition implies a \((1,1)\)-Poincaré inequality. Several examples of spaces satisfying the condition are also given, including the Heisenberg group and Riemann manifolds with suitable Ricci curvature.
