The authors prove a result on the Lie structure of semiprime superalgebras with superinvolution that mimics the corresponding result for semiprime rings with involution. Let \(A\) be an associative, semiprime superalgebra over a commutative ring containing \(1/2\). Assume that \(A\) has a superinvolution, that \(K\) is its Lie superalgebra of skew elements, and that \(U\) is a Lie ideal of \(K\). Here of course the bracket \([a,b]\) on homogeneous elements takes the degrees of these elements into account in the usual way. The authors prove that either \(A\) is the subdirect sum of homomorphic images \(A_1\) and \(A_2\) so that \(A_1\) satisfies the standard identity \(S_4\) and the image of \(U\) in \(A_2\) is central, or else there is an ideal \(T\) of \(A\) with \(0\neq[T\cap K,K]\subseteq U\).
