    Inspired by the \textit{P.\,S.\thinspace Muhly} and \textit{J.\,N.\thinspace Renault} groupoid treatment [Trans.\ Am.\ Math.\ Soc.\ 274, 1--44 (1982; Zbl 0509.46049)] of the Wiener--Hopf \(C^*\)-algebras related to semigroups of isometries in \({\mathcal B}(H)\), the authors associate a groupoid \(C^*\)-algebra \(C^*({\mathcal G})\) to a class of \(C_0\)-semigroups of partial isometries on a Hilbert space \(H\). They establish the exact sequence \(0\rightarrow C_0\left((0,\infty],{\mathcal K}(H)\right)\rightarrow C^*({\mathcal G}) \rightarrow C_0(\mathbb R) \rightarrow 0\) and a bijective correspondence between nondegenerate representations \(\pi\) of \(C^*({\mathcal G})\) and the respective semigroups, say \((u_t^{\pi})_{t\geq0}\), on \(H_{\pi}\). There is an unbounded affiliated element \(A\) generating \(C^*({\mathcal G})\), in the \textit{S.\,L.\thinspace Woronowicz} sense [see Commun.\ Math.\ Phys.\ 136, No.\,2, 399--432 (1991; Zbl 0743.46080)], such that on a dense domain \(\pi(A)=d^{+}u_t^{\pi}/dt| _{t=0}\).
