The authors deal with the following functional differential equation with delay \[ \frac{d}{dt}x(t)=Ax(t)+L(x_t)+f(t),\qquad t\in {\mathbb R},\tag{1} \] where \(A:D(A)\to X\) is not necessarily densely defined linear operator on a Banach space \(X\). By a reduction of the above equation into a finite dimensional ordinary differential equation the authors prove the existence and uniqueness of an almost automorphic solution of (1). As an application, the existence and uniqueness of an almost automorphic solution of a Lotka-Volterra type system with diffusion, is proved, too.
