The purpose of the paper is to prove some existence results for compressible Navier-Stokes systems which are written as \(\partial _{t}\rho +\text{div}(\rho u)=0\) and \(\partial _{t}(\rho u)+\text{div}(\rho u\otimes u)-\lambda \text{div}(\Psi (\rho )d(u)+\nabla p+(\mu +\widetilde{\lambda })\nabla (\text{div}u)=\rho f\), posed in \( \Omega \times (0,T)\), where \(\Omega \) is a domain of \(R^{d}\), \(d=2\) or 3. Here \(d(u)=(\nabla u+^{t}\nabla u)/2\). The velocity \(u\) and the density \( \rho \) of the fluid satisfy \(u=v\mp \nabla \varphi _{\pm }(\rho )\), with \( \text{div}v=0\) and \(\rho \nabla \varphi _{\pm }(\rho )=\pm \nabla \Psi (\rho )\) \ Choosing \(\Psi (\rho )=2\mu /\lambda \) and neglecting some \(O(\lambda ^{2})\) terms, one gets the so-called Khazhikhov-Smagulov models for compressible fluids. The authors first recall the existence results which are available for these Khazhikhov-Smagulov models and prove the existence of generalized (weak) global in time solutions or that of strong and locally in time solutions, depending on the hypotheses imposed to the data. The authors then introduce two new Khazhikhov-Smagulov models. This is first a pollutant model for the unknown velocity \(v\), considering \(\mu =\lambda \) and changing the expression of the pressure. Then a combustion model is introduced, obtained when letting the Mach number go to 0 and following \textit{P. L. Lions} [Mathematical topics in fluid mechanics. Vol. 2: Compressible models (Oxford Lecture Series in Mathematics and its Applications. 10. Oxford: Clarendon Press) (1998; Zbl 0908.76004)]. For these two models, the authors prove the existence of a weak or generalized solution which is global in time. The proofs are mainly based on appropriate maximum principles, the derivation of energy estimates and some compactness results through embeddings. The end of the paper comes back to the general model but considering the case where \(\Omega \) is a 2D or a 3D torus. The authors again prove an existence result for a global generalized solution.
