Let \(M\) be a closed subset of a real Hilbert space \(X\). Many works explore the relation of the geometry of \(M\) with approximation properties of \(M\), for example, relating the convexity of \(M\) with the uniqueness of best approximations from \(M\) to points in \(X\). The author calls \(M\) Vlasov-Wulbert connected if \(M\) intersects all open spheres in a connected set. For example, all convex sets are Vlasov-Wulbert connected. It is an open question if all uniqueness sets \(M\) (i.e., \(M\) admits at most one best approximation to each point in \(X\)) are convex, but the author proves here that all uniqueness sets with a bounded complement are Vlasov-Wulbert connected. The actual results in the paper are more general than stated above.
