Given a measurable space \((T,\mathcal{T})\), a set \(X\) and a map \(\varphi:T\to X\) there is a natural quotient \(\sigma\)-algebra \(\mathfrak{N}_\varphi\) on~\(X\): the collection \(\{B\subseteq X:\varphi^{-1}[B]\in\mathcal{T}\}\) and a similar \(\sigma\)-algebra \(\mathfrak{M}_\varphi\) can be defined on~\(T\times X\) with respect to the graph map \(G_\varphi:t\mapsto \bigl(t,\varphi(t)\bigr)\). The author gives descriptions of these \(\sigma\)-algebras without explicitly using \(\varphi^{-1}\) and \(G_\varphi^{-1}\). The algebra \(\mathfrak{N}_\varphi\) is obtained as the union of the classes \(\bigl\{B\subseteq X: \varphi[A]\subseteq B\subseteq X\setminus\varphi[T\setminus A]\bigr\}\), one for each \(A\in\mathcal{T}\) and a similar description can be given for \(\mathfrak{M}_\varphi\).
