The paper demonstrates that in contrast to lower separation axioms (as shown by \textit{R.~Lowen} and \textit{M.~Sioen} [Appl. Gen. Top. 4, 475--486 (2003; Zbl 1058.54010)]), the regularity-type axioms in approach theory need not be intrinsically topological. The authors introduce the concepts of pre-regularity and regularity for approach spaces and prove among other things that topological coreflections of such spaces need not be topologically regular. The authors also consider regularity notions for approach frames in the sense of \textit{B.~Banaschewski, R.~Lowen} and \textit{C.~Van~Olmen} [Topology Appl. 153, 3059--3070 (2006; Zbl 1114.54007)].
