The authors introduce two new notions: 1. That of \(\tau\)-CS module, defined as a module in which each \(\tau\)-dense submodule is essential in a direct summand of it. (Here \(\tau\) denotes a hereditary torsion theory on \(R\)-Mod, while CS or extending module means a module in which each submodule is essential in a direct summand of it.); 2. That of a strongly \(\tau\)-CS module, defined as a CS module in which each submodule is \(\tau\)-essential in a direct summand of it. As the paper contains part of the Ph.D. thesis of the first author, properties of the concepts introduced are investigated as well as their relationships with the usual concepts of \(\tau\)-injectivity, \(\tau\)-simplicity, \(\tau\)-uniformity, and other concepts on modules. Structure theorems for a \(\tau\)-complemented module over a ring with ACC on left ideals of the form \((0:x)\) and for the modules defined in the paper are given in the last section. It is quite difficult to reproduce so many results, but the paper is interesting for researchers in module theory.
