A quadratic Lie algebra over a commutative field \({\mathbb K}\) of characteristic zero is a finite-dimensional Lie algebra \({\mathfrak g}\) over \({\mathbb K}\) endowed with a non-degenerate symmetric bilinear form \(B\colon{\mathfrak g}\times{\mathfrak g}\to{\mathbb K}\) which is invariant in the sense that \(B([x,y],z)=B(x,[y,z])\) for all \(x,y,z\in{\mathfrak g}\). The purpose of the paper under review is to develop methods that should eventually lead to a description of the quadratic Lie algebras \({\mathfrak g}\) which support a symplectic form \(\omega:{\mathfrak g}\times{\mathfrak g}\to{\mathbb K}\). These symplectic structures on a quadratic Lie algebra are in a one-to-one correspondence with the skew-symmetric invertible derivations, and therefore the quadratic Lie algebra is nilpotent whenever it supports a symplectic structure. The first theorem of the paper under review says that the quadratic symplectic Lie algebras over an algebraically closed field are precisely the \(T^*\)-extensions of Lie algebras possessing invertible derivations, in the sense of \textit{M.~Bordemann} [Acta Math. Univ. Comen., New Ser. 66, No. 2, 151--201 (1997; Zbl 1014.17003)]. As an application of this theorem, one classifies the quadratic symplectic Lie algebras of dimension at most~8 over the complex field. In the last two sections of the paper one provides an inductive description of the quadratic symplectic Lie algebras in terms of Manin triples again under the hypothesis that the ground field is algebraically closed.
