This review article is focused on measurements of the gravitational constant and its hypothetical spatial or temporal variation. To put the work into perspective, the author begins with a review of higher-dimensional theories, from Kaluza-Klein to braneworld scenarios. Then the system of fundamental physical constants and our present knowledge about the gravitational constant are discussed. Among other things, the author suggests a method of how to measure hypothetical deviations from the inverse square law in a laboratory experiment.
