The title refers to a property of metric spaces which, at least for finitely generated metrizable groups, is weaker than amenability. This property was introduced by \textit{G. Yu} [Invent. Math. 139, No.~1, 201--240 (2000; Zbl 0956.19004)] as an interesting tool in his important work on the Novikov conjecture. Amongst other things, Yu proved that a metric space with property (A) coarsely embeds in a Hilbert space. The converse was left open; this paper provides a counterexample. Namely, if \(\Gamma\) is a finite group equipped with the word length metric, then the disjoint union of all \(\Gamma^n\) (metrized in a natural way) fails property (A), but nevertheless does coarsely embed into \(\ell^p\) whenever \(1\leq p\leq\infty\).
