The authors characterise \(1\)-codimensional \(u\)-ideals, a notion studied in [\textit{G.\,Godefroy, N.\,J.\thinspace Kalton} and \textit{P.\,D.\thinspace Saphar}, Stud.\ Math.\ 104, No.\,1, 13--59 (1993; Zbl 0814.46012)], by means of an intersection property of balls that is reminiscent of the corresponding result on \(M\)-ideals and reads as follows: If \(\dim Y/X =1\), then \(X\) is a \(u\)-ideal in \(Y\) if and only if for every \(\varepsilon>0\), \(y\in Y\) and \(x_1,x_2,x_3\in X\), the three closed balls \(B(y+x_i, \| y-x_i\| +\varepsilon)\) intersect in a point of~\(X\). They also show that this condition for two balls is not sufficient. Another result says, for a subspace \(X\subset Y\), that \(X\) is a \(u\)-ideal in \(Y\) if and only if \(X\) is a \(u\)-ideal in all \(X\subset Z\subset Y\) with \(\dim Z/X\leq2\). An example shows that one cannot replace this with \(\dim Z/X\leq1\).
