Let \(X\) and \(Y\) be Banach spaces and denote by \(\mathcal R \mathcal N_+\) the class of bounded linear operators \(T\) from \(X\) into \(Y\) with the following property: If \(A:L_1\to X\) and \(TA\) is representable, then \(A\) is representable (via Bochner integrals). The class \(\mathcal R \mathcal N_+\) has been extensively studied by various authors, references to such studies are given in the first part of the introduction of the paper. In order to enjoy the statement of the main result here, it suffices, however, to note that if \(T\in\mathcal R \mathcal N_+\) and \(K\) is compact, then the perturbation \(T+K\) is in \(\mathcal R \mathcal N_+\) and the kernel \(N(T+K)\) has the RNP. In the paper under review, the authors look at the class of operators from \(X\) into \(Y\) such that \(T^\ast\) belongs to \(\mathcal R \mathcal N_+\). They prove the following dichotomy: Either \(T^\ast\) belongs to \(\mathcal R \mathcal N_+\) or there is a compact \(K\) such that \(N(T^\ast +K^\ast)\) fails the RNP. The compact \(K\) is constructed as a nuclear operator in a way such that the failure of the RNP for \(N(T^\ast +K^\ast)\) can be obtained from a tree-description of the RNP.
