\textit{H. Busemann} and \textit{C. M. Petty} stated in [Math. Scand. 4, 88--94 (1956; Zbl 0070.39301)] the problem asking whether the origin-symmetric convex bodies, in the real \(n\)-dimensional space, with a larger volume of all \(i\)-dimensional sections necessarily have a larger volume. The authors of this paper deal with a generalization of this problem in connection with \((i,k)\)-intersection bodies and the structure of the classes of \(i\)-intersection bodies. Theorems generalising Zhang's affirmative answer to the generalized Busemann--Petty problem are given while the body with a smaller \(i\)-dimensional volume belongs to particular classes.
