A finite element method is considered for a nonlinear singular elliptic equation arising from the black hole theory. It describes the evolution of a hypersurface whose normal velocity equals the reciprocal of its mean curvature. First a finite element method for a regularized flow is considered which involves a small parameter \(\varepsilon\). Since the viscosity solution of the original problem is unique, convergence for \(h \to 0\) and \(\varepsilon \to 0\) can be shown.
