    A \(C_0\)-semigroup \(\{S(t); t \geq 0\}\) in a Banach space \(E\) is said to be polynomially bounded if \(\| S(t)\| \leq C(1 + t^\alpha)\) \((t \geq 0)\) with \(\alpha \geq 0\). The abscissa of uniform boundedness, \(s_0(A)\), of the resolvent \(R(\lambda; A)\) (where \(A\) denotes the infinitesimal generator) is the least \(a\) for which \(\| R(\lambda; A)\|\) is bounded in \(\Re\lambda>a\), and the operator \(A\) has a \(p\)-integrable resolvent if, for some/all \(a, b > s_0(A)\), we have that \[ \int_{-\infty}^\infty \| R(a + it, A) u \| ^p \,dt < \infty \quad (u \in E), \qquad \int_{-\infty}^\infty \| R(b + it, A') v \| ^q \,dt < \infty \quad (v \in E'), \] where \(p > 1,\) \(1/p + 1/q = 1.\) The authors characterize polynomially bounded semigroups in the class of semigroups having \(p\)-integrable resolvent by means of growth conditions on the resolvent.
