The author investigates skew derivations and Poisson structures on general quantum polynomial algebras \({\mathcal O}_{\mathbf q}=k_{\mathbf q}[X_1^{\pm 1},\dots,X_r^{\pm 1},X_{r+1},\dots,X_n]\), where \(k\) denotes a base field and \(\mathbf q=(q_{ij})\) is a multiplicatively antisymmetric matrix over \(k\) whose entries generate a free Abelian subgroup of \(k^\times\) of maximal rank. One section of the paper surveys results in the literature concerning automorphisms and derivations of \({\mathcal O}_{\mathbf q}\), and continuous automorphisms and derivations of the Mal'tsev-Neumann division algebra \(\mathcal F\) associated with \({\mathcal O}_{\mathbf q}\). In the following section, it is proved that the only Poisson brackets on \({\mathcal O}_{\mathbf q}\) are scalar multiples of the commutator bracket, and similarly for continuous Poisson brackets on \(\mathcal F\). The final section specializes to quantum tori of rank two, when \({\mathcal O}_{\mathbf q}=k_{\mathbf q}[X^{\pm 1},Y^{\pm 1}]\), and classifies skew derivations on \({\mathcal O}_{\mathbf q}\). In many cases, it is shown that skew derivations on \({\mathcal O}_{\mathbf q}\) are inner, and that algebraic skew derivations must vanish. Reviewer's remark: The Poisson results mentioned above exemplify a theorem of \textit{D. R. Farkas} and \textit{G. Letzter} [J. Pure Appl. Algebra 125, No. 1-3, 155-190 (1998; Zbl 0974.17025)] stating that for a prime Poisson algebra which is not commutative, every Poisson bracket is a multiple of the commutator bracket by an element of the extended centroid.
