The author studies the numerical characteristics of monomial ideals in polynomial rings \(A=k[x_1,\ldots x_n]\) and in exterior algebras \(E\) on the same number of variables. In Chapter 2 of the paper, the author generalizes Macaulay's theorem to quotient rings. That is, the author gives conditions on and ideal \(I\) and on ideals \(J\) containing \(I\) such that Macaulay's theorem holds for the images of \(J\) in the ring \(R=A/I\). The author then proves similar results for quotients of the exterior algebra \(E\). The author also shows that the conditions necessary for Macaulay's theorem to hold on \(A/I\) or \(E/I\) extend to rings with additional variables. In Chapter 3 the author focuses on strongly stable ideals and piecewise-lexsegment ideals, generalizing results on graded Betti numbers to these classes of ideals. In Section 3.4, the author examines the extremal case of the conditions for Macaulay's theorem, and relates this to Gotzmann ideals. Chapter 4 is similar in flavor to Chapter 3, but focuses on the exterior algebra instead of the polynomial ring. In Chapter 5, the author fixes the form of \(I\), so that \(I\) is generated by powers of the variables. The author then gives a minimal free graded resolution of an \(I\)-stable ideal \(J\) and uses this to describe the Hilbert series and Betti numbers of \(J\). When \(J\) is generated in degree \(d\), the resolution is \(d\)-linear. A basis is found for the modules \(\text{Tor}^A_q(A/J,k)\), giving the Koszul homology modules. These results are used to give conditions on \(I\)-stable ideals \(J\) under which the quotient ring \(A/J\) is Gorenstein or Cohen-Macaulay. Resolutions and Betti numbers for ideals which are strongly or weakly \(I-\)stable are then examined.
