The authors consider a deteriorating system subject to external and internal failures, whose deterioration level is known by means of inspections. Depending on the deterioration level, there are two types of repairs, minimal and perfect, following phase-type distributions. The failures and inspection are governed by Markovian arrival processes. The stationary probability vector and different random times of interest in the evolution of this Markov system are calculated. A numerical application illustrates a cost optimization problem. Many previous papers where exponential or Erlangian times are considered as special cases of this model.
