Unlike topological \(K\)-theory, algebraic \(K\)-theory does not satisfy the Mayer-Vietoris property. However, the fiber of the map from \(K\)-theory to cyclic homology is better behaved. In this well-written paper the authors prove that a homotopy Cartesian square \({\mathcal A}\) of ring spectra (satisfying a familiar surjectivity condition) gives, after \(p\)-completion, rise to a homotopy Cartesian cube \[ K({\mathcal A})\to TC({\mathcal A}) \] induced by the cyclotomic trace; here \(TC\) denotes topological cyclic homology. This generalises a result of \textit{T. Geisser} and \textit{L. Hesselholt} from discrete rings to ring spectra [``Bi-relative algebraic \(K\)-theory and topological cyclic homology'', Invent. Math. 166, No. 2, 359--395 (2006; Zbl 1107.19002)].
