A real Lie algebra \({\mathfrak g}\) is algebraically rigid if \(\dim_{\mathbb R}H^2({\mathfrak g},{\mathfrak g})=0\). One of the main results of the paper under review is a classification of the solvable, algebraically rigid Lie algebras of dimension at most~8. Another circle of ideas approached in the paper concerns the comparison between the properties of the rigid real Lie algebras and the rigid complex ones. In particular, one finds that the decomposability theorem of \textit{R. Carles} [Ann. Inst. Fourier 34, No. 3, 65--82 (1984; Zbl 0519.17004)] does not extend in a direct manner to the real Lie algebras.
