In several recent papers, the author has been carrying out the program of obtaining basic results of semigroup theory (such as the Hille--Yosida and Trotter theorems) from diverse types of functional calculi. Another part of this program has been the treatment of the maximum regularity problem by means of the joint functional calculus for the two operators involved in the problem. The author continues this program here. This time, the objective is the famous theorem of \textit{G.\,Dore} and \textit{A.\,Venni} [Math.\ Z.\ 196, 189--201 (1987; Zbl 0615.47002)], a theorem by \textit{S.\,Monniaux} [Math.\ Nachr.\ 204, 163--183 (1999; Zbl 0942.47001)] and some results in cosine function theory. The nature of the problems under study requires a functional calculus involving groups \(U(s)\) such as groups of imaginary powers \(\{A^{i s}; -\infty < s < \infty\}\). This calculus brings into play geometric conditions on the space that insure the convergence of certain singular integrals.
