The author proves that any algebraic monoid with dense affine unit group is affine; in particular, any irreducible algebraic monoid with affine unit group is affine, which affirmatively answers an open problem by \textit{L. E. Renner} [Semigroup Forum 30, No.~2, 167-176 (1984; Zbl 0533.20039)].
