In this paper, the author investigates the commutators of \(2\times 2\) block operator matrices with (unbounded) operator entries. The matrix representation of a symmetric operator in a Krein space is exploited. As a consequence, the author extends the domination result due to Cichoń, Stochel and Szafraniec to the case of Krein spaces as follows: Let \(\mathcal H=\mathcal H_0\oplus \mathcal H_1\) be an orthogonal sum of two Hilbert spaces. Let \(S\) and \(B\) be \({\mathcal H_0}\)-bounded operators with block operator matrix representations \(\left(\begin{smallmatrix} S_{00}& -S_{10}^\ast\\ S_{10}& S_{11}\end{smallmatrix}\right)\) and \(\left(\begin{smallmatrix} B_{00}& -B_{10}^\ast\\ B_{10}& B_{11}\end{smallmatrix}\right)\) such that \(S_{11}\) (resp., \(B_{11}\)) is a selfadjoint (resp., a symmetric) operator in \(\mathcal H_1\). Assume also that \(U\) is of type \(\Omega_S\), which means that \(U\) is a unbounded subset of the resolvent set of \(S\) and there exist \(t>0\) and \(d\geq0\) such that for all \(z\in U\), \(| z| >d\) and \(| z| \| (S-z)^{-1}\| \leq t\). If for some \(m\in\mathbb N\setminus \{0\}\), \(\mathcal H_0\subseteq \mathcal D(S^m)\subseteq \mathcal D(B)\) and \[ \sup_{z\in U}| z| \;\| [(S-z)^{-1},\, B]\| <\infty, \] then \(B_{11}\) is essentially selfadjoint on any core of \(S^m_{11}\).
