Let \(A\) be a commutative ring with 1. A subset \(A^+\) of \(A\) is called preordered if \(A^+\subseteq A\) with \(x + y\in A^+,\) and \(xy\in A^+\) for any two elments \(x,y \in A^+,\) also \(0\in A^+,\) \(1\in A^+,\) but \(-1\notin A^+.\) Given \(A\) equipped with a preordering \(A^+\), the authors look for a fractional ring extension, which is a ring of quotient in the sense of \textit{J. Lambek} [Lectures on Rings and Modules, Blaisdell, Toronto (1966; Zbl 0143.26403)] as big as possible such that \(A^+\) extends to a preordering \(R^+\) of \(R\), that is \(A\cap R^+ = A^+\) in a natural way. The authors the ask for subextensions \(A\subseteq B\) of \(A\subseteq R\) such that \(A\) is convex in \(B\) with respect to \(B^+ = B\cap R^+.\)
