Two phase transitions are described for a Watts-Strogatz model over the \(d\)-dimensional torus with certain long-range interactions chosen at random from the grid. To this end, the small world model is related to a contact process on an infinite graph which behaves similarly to the one on a tree. Contact processes on a modified small world model with behaviors different from that of the one on a tree are also studied. Some open problems for further study are provided.
