Using the oblique extension principle (OEP) in [\textit{I. Daubechies, B. Han, A. Ron} and \textit{Z. Shen}, ``Framelets: MRA-based constructions of wavelet frames'', Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 14, 1--46 (2003; Zbl 1035.42031)], this paper presents a nice construction procedure in Theorem~3 for deriving compactly supported multivariate pairs of dual wavelet frames from a pair of multivariate refinable functions with a general dilation matrix. In particular, in Lemmas~2--4, for interpolatory masks, the author showed that the general procedure in Theorem~3 is always applicable and the pair of dual wavelet frames has a few number of generators. These interesting results generalize the univariate results on pairs of dual wavelet frames in [\textit{I. Daubechies} and \textit{B. Han}, ``Pairs of dual wavelet frames from any two refinable functions'', Constr. Approx. 20, No. 3, 325--352 (2004; Zbl 1055.42025)] to the much more difficult multivariate setting. Symmetry and some optimality properties of such dual wavelet frames have also been addressed. Several convincing examples with the quincunx and dyadic dilation matrices are presented. It is worth pointing out here that the constraint on interpolatory masks in this paper is removed in [\textit{M. Ehler} and \textit{B. Han}, ``Wavelet bi-frames with few generators from multivariate refinable functions'', Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. (2008), in press, doi:10.1016/j.acha.2008.04.003].
