Recall that a sequence \((f_n)\) of measurable functions on the interval \([-1,1]\) converges completely to a measurable function \(f\) if \(\sum_n \lambda (\{ y \in [-1,1] : | f_n (y) - f(y)| > \epsilon \}) < \infty\) for all \(\epsilon > 0\), where \(\lambda\) denotes the Lebesgue measure. A real number \(x\) is a simple density point of a Lebesgue measurable set \(A\) if the characteristic function \(\chi_{n \cdot (A - x)}\) of the set \(n \cdot (A -x)\) converges almost everywhere to the constant function \(1\) on \([-1,1]\). \(x\) is a complete density point of \(A\) if \(\chi_{n \cdot (A - x)}\) converges completely to \(1\) on \([-1,1]\). Every complete density point is a simple density point, and every simple density point is a density point. The authors show that the set of complete density points \(\Phi_c (A)\) of a measurable set \(A\) is again measurable, and that the collection of all measurable sets \(A\) with \(A \subseteq \Phi_c (A)\) is a topology on the real line stronger than the natural topology, but weaker than the density topology. Using a construction of \textit{C.G. Lekkerkerker} [Nederl. Akad. Wet., Proc., Ser. A 61, 197--205 (1958; Zbl 0086.03802)], they prove that there is a measurable set \(B\) such that \(0\) is a simple density point but not a complete density point of \(B\), and apply this to obtain that the complete density topology is strictly weaker than the simple density topology.
