The authors characterize the surjective isometries and the hermitian operators on the spaces \(A^{1,p}(X)\) of absolutely continuous \(X\)-valued functions \(f\) defined on \([0,1]\) such that \(\frac{df}{dx}\) exists a.e.\ and belongs to \(L^p([0,1],X)\) for \(1<p<\infty\), \(p\neq 2\), and in the case of separable Banach spaces \(X\) with no nontrivial \(L^1\)-projections and not isometrically equivalent to \(L^p([0,1],X)\). Their results establish that the surjective isometries \(T\) are given by \(T(f)(x)= T_0(f(0))+\int_0^x U(f')(t)\,dt\), where \(U\) and \(T_0\) are surjective isometries of \(L^p([0,1],X)\) and \(X\), respectively, and the hermitian operators \(B\) are given by \(B(f)(x)= B_0(f(0))+\int_0^x B_1(t)(f'(t))\,dt\), where \(B_1\) and \(B_0\) are hermitian operator-valued functions acting on \(L^p([0,1],X)\) and \(X\), respectively. Under some extra assumptions, they also obtain the conditions of isometric equivalence of two hermitian operators on \(A^{1,p}(X)\).
