The paper aims to produce a rigorous proof of the fact that a linear defect created in a 3D photonic crystal with a complete photonic bandgap plays the role of an inserted waveguide. The corresponding eigenfunctions of the electromagnetic waves are exponentially localized in the transverse plane. The proof is based on the analysis of the Maxwell's equations.
