In the paper, the authors consider the low regularity of the initial value problem (IVP) for the Benney-Lin equation \[ \begin{cases} u_t+u u_{x}+u_{xxx}+\beta(u_{xx}+u_{xxxx})+\eta u_{xxxxx}=0,\\ u(x,0)=\varphi(x),\end{cases} \] where \(\beta>0\), \(\eta\in\mathbb R\). The equation describes the evolution of long waves in various problems of fluid dynamics. The authors prove that the above IVP is globally well-posed in \(H^s(\mathbb R)\) for \(s>-2\). They also show that for \(s<-2\) some ill-posedness occurs.
