    Let \(B(H)\) be the \(C^*\)-algebra of all bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space \(H\). Defining \(\Phi\) on \(B(H) \oplus B(H)\) by \(\Phi(A\oplus B)=(A+B)/2\), the arithmetic operator mean and the harmonic operator mean can be defined by \(A\nabla B:=\Phi(A\oplus B)\) and \(A!B:=\Phi((A\oplus B)^{-1})^{-1}\), respectively. The authors prove that if \(A, B\) satisfy \(0<m \leq A\), \(B\leq M\) and \(\mu\in [0,1]\), then \(A\nabla_\mu B \leq \frac{M \nabla_\mu m}{M!_\mu m} A!_\mu B\), and thus they provide a noncommutative Kantorovich inequality. They also examine the optimality of the constant \((\sqrt{M}-\sqrt{m})^2\) in the additive reverse inequality \(A\nabla B -A!B \leq (\sqrt{M}-\sqrt{m})^2\) (see Theorem 1.32 of \textit{T.\,Furuta, J.\,Mićić, J.\,E.\thinspace Pečarić} and \textit{Y.\,Seo} [``Mond-Pečarić methods in operator inequalities'' (Monographs in Inequalities 1; Zagreb: ELEMENT) (2005; Zbl 1135.47012), reviewed below] for a general inequality concerning a positive linear mapping \(\Phi\)). A comparison of the \(\mu\)-geometric mean \(A\sharp_\mu B:=A^{1/2}(A^{-1/2}BA^{-1/2})^\mu A^{1/2}\) with \(A\nabla_\mu B\) and \(A!_\mu B\) is given as well.
