The authors consider the following reaction-diffusion system which describes a competition model for two species with a protection zone for the weak competitor: \[ \begin{aligned} u_t -\Delta u= \lambda u -u^2-\eta b(x)uv, &\quad x\in\Omega, \quad t>0, \\ v_t -\Delta v= \mu v -v^2-duv,&\quad x\in\Omega_1, \;\;t>0,\\ \partial_\nu u=0, &\quad x\in\partial\Omega, \;\;t>0,\\ \partial_\nu v =0,&\quad x\in\partial\Omega_1, \;t>0,\\ u (x,0)=u_0 (x)\geq 0,&\quad x\in\Omega,\\ v(x,0)=v_0(x)\geq0, &\quad x\in\Omega_1,\end{aligned} \tag{1} \] where \(\Omega\) is a bounded domain in \(\mathbb{R}^N \) with smooth boundary \(\partial\Omega;\) \(\Omega_0\) is a subdomain of \(\Omega \) such that \(\overline{\Omega}_0\subset\Omega;\) \(\Omega_1 = \Omega \diagdown\overline{\Omega}_0;\) \( \Omega\) is the habitat for the species \(u\) with \(\Omega_0\) as a protection zone; \(\Omega_1 \) is the habitat for species \(v;\) \(\lambda, \mu, d, \eta\) are positive constant; \(b(x)\) is a function that assumes the value zero for \(x\in\overline{\Omega}_0\) and a positive constant for \(x\in\overline{\Omega}\diagdown\overline{\Omega}_0.\) The authors study several cases of the corresponding elliptic system, which give the steady states of problem (1), and they determine the stability of these steady states and related properties as well as the corresponding dynamical behavior of problem (1).
