Let \(\max(G)\) denote the number of maximal proper subgroups of a finite group \(G\). \textit{G. E. Wall} [in J. Aust. Math. Soc. 2, 35-59 (1961; Zbl 0121.27302)] proved that \(\max(G)\leq|G|\) holds for a solvable group \(G\) and conjectured that the inequality holds for any finite group \(G\). In the paper under review the authors establish new bounds on \(\max(G)\) for almost simple groups as well as the general linear groups.
